I know what you mean. With the kids grown up and settled, we decided it was time for something new. We packed up a five-bedroom house, overfilled a suitcase each, and moved to Thailand to work in 1996, staying three years. It changed our lives forever. I must write about that move.
That sounds like quite an adventure! Travel definitely changes you, and I would imagine that spending time abroad as you did certainly was life-changing :)
Our stories are very similar! Same time frame, empty nest, same three week vacation over Christmas time in 2023 … but in Portugal! We do have a trip planned now to visit France in the fall to go to a concert. I’ve never been and am so very excited!
This is super helpful. I feel as though my wife and I are just a few years behind you with the same issues (very indulged cats). Last spring I spent a month in Bourgogne , which was wonderful. I’m looking forward to reading more.
The bite-size chunks—this is a great plan. It lets you make the transition with much less pressure. Bonne continuation ❣️
At 53, as my wife and I now contemplate leaving Turkey and moving to Spain...I read with great interest!

Let me know if you need any tips on France. I’d love to help!
What a balanced perfect approach. Courage.

I could have written this exact same article! Glad to see you're crossing of the bite size chunks. Tres bien!

Hi Nelson—I’m glad you found it helpful! Where in Bourgogne were you? We love Dijon!
A tiny little hamlet called Chateau du Bois. Literally the middle of nowhere! It was a perfect place to write 🙂
A friend keeps telling me about Bordeaux, and highly recommends it!
We love it!
